During my wandering in the infinite fields of the Internet I have met several photographers and their photographs that really impressed me. They were completely unknown to me and maybe to many of us. As I continue my journey I will share my experiences. Every month I am going to present here one photograph which I really appreciated.

We see a family photo, black and white. It has a simple diagonal composition. It looks like a daguerreotype. The picture has a timeless spirit. Our sight is attracted to the eyes of the child. This sharp part is the centre of the picture though it is in the corner.

This picture reminds me the photographs of Julia Margaret Cameron. It has the same serenity and clear composition I like very much.

I like the multiple facets of this photograph. This is a charming picture. It is a family photo but also it is a piece of art. It is like a snapshot but perhaps it was staged. It looks old but it is actually modern. It conveys innocence and at the same time exhibits a small girl with a young man in the same bed.

I think that the special merit of this photo is blending two seemingly contradicting qualities: abstraction and intimity. The artist succeeded to express her ideas presenting a simple, beautiful and sincere image.

פרחים כמשל - מחוה לג'ורג'יה אוקיף

תערוכה בגלרית מלאור קיסריה, פתיחה 01/01/2010 בשעה 11:00

בדרך כלל אני מצלם ביוזמתי. אני הוגה איזה רעיון ראשוני ועובד עליו עד שגוף העבודה החדש מקבל את צורתו הסופית. תערוכה זו היא שונה, מין עבודה מוזמנת. הנושא היה נקבע: פרחים כמשל - מחוה לג'ורג'יה אוקיף. אני חייב להודות שלא ידעתי עליה הרבה, מלבד העובדה שהיא היתה אישתו, השראתו ודוגמנית העירום של הצלם האמריקאי המוכר, אלפרד שטיגליץ.

בהמשך למדתי כמה עובדות בסיסיות על ג'ורג'יה אוקיף. היא חייה כמעט 99 שנים. היא נחשבת אחת הציירות הגדולות של אמריקה במאה ה-20. היא מפורסת בזכות ציוריה גדולי המימדים של פרחים ושל ציורי הנופים המדבריים שיצרה בעשורים שהתגוררה בניו-מקסיקו.

כמו תמיד, יש נקודה יהודית ונקודה הונגרית. בעלה והמנטור שלה, אלפרד שטיגליץ היה יהודי. סבא שלה מצד אמא, ג'ורג' טוטו היה ממוצא הונגרי, הוא עזב את הונגריה ב-1848 אחרי המרד הכושל נגד אוסטריה.

בשנת 1976 פירסמה ג'ורג'יה אוקיף ספר אוטוביוגרפי. הבנתי שאני מזדהה עם רעיונותיה האמנותיים. אספר כמה ממחשבותיי על התערוכה כעין תגובה לאמירות שלה.

"אני פשוט מציירת מה שאני רואה"

מה זה פרח? פרחים הם יפים, בצבע לבן ואדום, ורוד וסגול. ריחם עדין. אולם פרח הוא איבר רביה של הצמח. היופי שלו הוא מעין פירסום: תאהב אותי. קישוטי פרחים הם דבר נפוץ אך קצת משונה, הצצה לאינטימיות של הצמח.

"אף אחד לא רואה פרח באמת, זה כה קטן ולוקח זמן, אין לנו זמן, ולראות לוקח זמן, כמו שלהיות חבר לוקח זמן"

אמנות הצילום ידועה על תכונתה 'לעצור את הזמן'. כך נוכל להסתכל מקרוב על דברים זעירים או על שינויים שקורים באיטיות. בימינו רעיון זה עוד פחות אופנתי כמו שזה היה בימי ג'ורג'יה אוקיף. הקולנוע, הטלוויזיה והוידאוקליפים החליפו את התמונה הסטטית. בפייסבוק אפשר להשיג אלפי חברים בקלות ההקלקה.

"החלטתי שאם אצייר פרח בגודל ענק אז לא יהיה אפשרי להתעלם מיופיו."

אני חושב שיש מקום לצילום יפה ושליו וגם כן ואמיתי. אכן, לוקח זמן להיכנס לעולמה של האמנות. אחד מאתגריו של האמן הוא לגרום לאנשים לעצור, להסתכל ולהרהר על יצירת האמנות. התחרות עבור תשומת הלב היא גדולה. החוויה עצמה של ההאטה וההכרה של משהו מקרוב, היא המתנה שהאמנות מעניקה לצופה.

"לעתים קרובות ציירתי רק חלק מהנושא כי היה נדמה לי כי הם ביטאו את האמירה שלי כמו השלם ואפילו בצורה יותר טובה."

כחברה בחוג האמנים סביב אלפרד שטיגליץ, ג'ורג'יה אוקיף היתה מושפעת מצלמים כמו אדוורד שטייכן, אדוורד ווסטון ואנסל אדמס שלהראות דברים קטנים בקנה מידה גדול או להתמקד בפרט יחודי של הנושא הם מאפיינים של אמנותם.

אני מנסה ללכת בעקבות גישה זאת בצילומים שבתערוכה. קיימות מאות מיליוני תמונות של פרחים, פשוטו כמשמעו. אני בספק אם יש צורך בעוד צילומים. אבל אולי יש צורך באמירות.

"הייתי חייבת ליצור דבר שווה ערך של מה שהרגשתי כלפי מה שראיתי ולא להעתיק אותו."

בצילומים שלי אני מנסה להביע תכונות פנימיות של הפרחים, או יותר נכון, מה שאני מרגיש כלפיהם. פרחים הם מהונדסים היטב, פוקציונליים, עדינים וצבעוניים. הם רוצים להרשים. לפעמים יש להם פגמים וליכלוך, פצעים וצלקות. הם נלחמים עם היופי שלהם. פרחים הם זמניים, ברגע שהם מילאו תפקידם נובלים ונעלמים. אך בינתיים הם מתחלקים ביופים עם כל אחד שמוכן להסתכל מקרוב

לסיום שני משפטים של ג'ורג'יה אוקיף שאין לי מה להוסיף רק להסכים:

"ליצור את עולמך באמנות דורש אומץ"

"כל הישג שאתה מוכן להכריז עליו הוא שלך"

I usually create photographs on my own initiative. I conceive some basic idea and then I work on it until a new body of work gets its final form. This exhibition is different; it is a kind of a commissioned work. The theme is: Flowers as an Allegory - a tribute to Georgia O'Keeffe. I admit that I knew hardly anything about her beside the fact that she was the wife, muse and nude model of the famous American photographer, Alfred Stieglitz.

Then I learnt some basic facts about Georgia O'Keeffe. She lived for almost 99 years. She is considered one of the greatest painters of America in the 20th century. She is famous for her large scale flower paintings and desert landscapes she created during the decades she lived in New Mexico.

As always, there is both a Jewish and a Hungarian point. The husband and mentor of Georgia O'Keeffe, Alfred Stieglitz was Jewish. Her maternal grandfather, George Totto, was of Hungarian origin who left Hungary after the failed revolt against

Austria

in 1848.

In 1976 Georgia O'Keeffe published her autobiography. I realized that some of her artistic ideas resonate with me. I offer my thoughts about this exhibition as a kind of response to some of her statements.

"I simply paint what I see."

What is a flower? Flowers are beautiful, white and red, pink and violet. They have delicate scents. However, a flower is actually a reproductive organ of a plant. Its beauty is a kind of advertisement: Love Me! Flower decoration is routine but it is a bit odd too. Peeking into the intimacy of a plant.

"Nobody sees a flower, really, it is so small it takes time, we haven't time, and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time."

Photography is well-known for its special quality of 'stopping the time'. Thus we can have a closer look at small things or slow changes. This idea is even less in vogue today than in the days of Georgia O'Keeffe. The movie screen, television and video clips displace the static image. On Facebook one can have thousands of friends at the ease of a click.

"I decided that if I could paint that flower in a huge scale, you could not ignore its beauty."

I believe that there is a place for photographs which are serene and fair but also true and sincere. Indeed, it takes time to get into the world of the art. One of the challenges of the artist is to cause people to stop, look and contemplate the artwork. The competition for the attention span is huge. But the very experience of slowing down and getting to know something really is the gift the art presents to the viewer.

"I often painted fragments of things because it seemed to make my statement as well as or better than the whole could."

As a member of the artistic circle around Alfred Stieglitz, Georgia O'Keeffe was influenced by photographers like Edward Steichen, Edward Weston and Ansel Adams. Showing small things in a large scale or concentrating on a peculiar detail of an object is one of the characteristics of their fine art photography.

I tried to follow this concept in the photographs I have exhibited here. There are literally hundreds of millions of flower photos, I doubt if there is a real need for some more. But maybe there is a need for statements."

I had to create an equivalent for what I felt about what I was looking at- not copy it."

In my photographs I try to express some inner characteristics of the flower, better said, what I feel or imagine about them. Flowers are well-engineered and functional, delicate and colorful. They want to impress. Sometimes they have defects and dirt, wounds and scars. They fight for their beauty. Flowers are evanescent, the moment they fulfill their role they wither and die. But in the meantime they share their beauty with anybody who is ready to look at them from close up.

Finally two statements from Georgia O'Keeffe, I cannot add anything, I completely agree with them.

"To create one's world in any of the arts takes courage."

"You get whatever accomplishment you are willing to declare."

This exhibition reminds me a book of the Hungarian photographer Tamás Féner (Corvina, 1984) on a very similar subject, Jewish customs and ceremonies in Hungary

However, there are differences. The exhibition shows a living community, while the photos taken in Hungary some 25 years ago are sad and show a kind of vanishing world.
Besides the fact that Menachem Kahana creates fine and real photographs some of them I consider as a masterpiece of art. Two examples:

I really like this image of a Tisch of Belz. A multiple of faces same but different. The contrast of the Rebe, sitting alone. The color of the red wine. The seriousness of those who serve the Rebe. And as the punctum, the face of a boy under the table. Great!

I also really liked this picture of a bride waiting for the dance on her wedding. No physical touch but via a long black string, looks like an umbilical cord. It is a rare photo of showing a real moment which is special in itself and also having several symbolic aspects: loneliness, womanhood, constraints. Touching.

I would like to tell you about my experience of having my solo photo exhibition.

The opening of my exhibition will be on Jan 15. It takes more effort than I thought first. I realized that there is a difference between taking pictures to yourself, showing pictures to your friends and presenting pictures in an exhibition.

Taking pictures is like seeing some nice girl, showing pictures is like dating, but an exhibition is like a marriage. It is a commitment.
